Concerned About STIs?
It's common and responsible to have questions about sexual health. In Canada, many STIs are treatable when caught early, and testing is confidential and readily available.
Why Get Checked?
If you're sexually active, have had unprotected sex, or notice any unusual symptoms, it's important to get tested. Many STIs can be present without symptoms.
Symptoms
Unusual discharge, pain or burning during urination, sores or bumps around genitals, unusual bleeding, pain during sex, itching in genital area, rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
What Causes It?
STIs are caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites that are transmitted through sexual contact. Different types of STIs have different causes and transmission methods.
Risk Factors
Having unprotected sexual contact is the primary risk. Multiple sexual partners increases risk. Previous STIs can increase risk of others. Age (15-24) carries higher risk.
How Is It Diagnosed?
In Canada, STIs are diagnosed through physical exams, urine tests, blood tests, and swab tests. Different infections require different testing methods.
Is It Treatable?
Many STIs are completely curable with proper treatment. Others can be effectively managed with medication. Early detection and treatment prevent complications.
